Preparing for College as a Senior
It’s finally senior year, and you’re ready to soak in your last months of being a high schooler. College is just around the corner and you couldn’t be more excited, but it won’t all be smooth sailing from here. While your high school career is winding down, there’s still a few things to do before you’re ready to move into your new dorm.
Know Where You Want to Apply
First and foremost, have a list of schools you’d be interested in attending. Now is the time to decide what you want to major in, and what colleges have programs that would be the best fit for you. Do you want to stay close to home, or go far away? What’s the tuition cost? Would you prefer a large school, or a smaller one? There’s tons of things to consider when choosing a school, so think carefully about it when making your list. It’s good to apply to multiple colleges. That way, you have a better chance of being accepted to at least one of them.
Check Your Test Scores
If you’re still not satisfied with your SAT or ACT score, be sure to retake it as soon as possible! Senior year is pretty last minute when it comes to taking the SAT or ACT for the first time, so hopefully, if you find yourself in a testing center as a senior, you’re doing it just for good measure. Be sure to send in the scores you are most proud of!
Tour Schools
Now that you have your list, see if it’s possible for you to visit the places you want to apply, or even places you’ve already applied. Find out what sort of events or tours they offer to prospective students, and check out as much of the college as you can. You might even be able to sit in on a class! Touring a university will give you a great idea of what life on campus will be like, and how school will work for you. Seeing everything firsthand is the best way to know if a certain college is the right choice.
Chat with College Students
See if you can contact someone who already goes to a school you're looking at, and ask them a few questions. How do they like the university? What are classes like? How is living in the dorms? What do you do for fun? There is so much you can learn about a school by chatting with a current student, especially things you may not get from simply going on a tour. Find someone who is willing to talk with you while you’re visiting the campus, or reach out to a student by email. There’s a good chance they will be more than happy to answer your questions!
Keep Your Grades Up
Senior year isn’t time to slack off. You will still need to submit your final transcripts to the college you decide to attend, and if you do poorly, they may rescind the offer. Make sure you’re still studying and completing assignments on time, participating in class and doing your best. Your final high school GPA will depend on it!
