4 Tips for Getting Started on Your College Essays

Are you still having trouble getting started on your college essay? Have you been staring at a blank page, waiting for the essay to write itself for days on end? Don’t worry. You’re not alone. Getting started is the hardest part of the process. It can feel overwhelming or nearly impossible. The good news is that it doesn’t have to. Here are 4 easy steps to get the words flowing.

1. Talk to someone else.

Oftentimes, a parent, friend or teacher knows you better than you know yourself. Ask them how they would sum up your life, how they would describe you or see if they have any memorable stories or experiences with you. This conversation might just spark an idea for your essay!

2. Try a 5-minute brainstorm session.

Set a timer for 5 minutes and start listing anything and everything you are interested in. Don’t worry about grammar, spelling or editing yet. Just write. Allowing yourself to write without restrictions can be very helpful, especially in the early stages of your essay.

3. Ignore the essay prompts.

Yes, you read that right! Like we said, writing without restrictions can be the best way to get started. You can realistically write about anything you want and make it fit the prompts later, so don’t let them stand in your way at the beginning.

4. Tell a story.

Very often, the best college essays start with a moment or experience. Think back to some of the most formative, exciting or unique experiences in your life. Even small, seemingly insignificant moments can be weaved into interesting tales. Pick one, start writing and see where it goes. If you’re able to entertain the person reading your essay, you’ll be good to go!
