5 Benefits of Dorming at College

Should I let my child dorm? Isn't it a pain to be away from my family? Here are the reasons why you should take the leap.

1. An opportunity for a child to grow up!

For a lot of youths, college is the first time they will be away from their parents for such an extended period, and thus an excellent opportunity for them to begin to take responsibility in a safe environment. Let them learn how to cook, clean, do laundry, take responsibility for their possessions.

2. A fresh start...

where children can develop a persona of their own as opposed to forever being trapped in the role that they came to take on in high school.

3. Social Skills

A much underestimated skill that will inevitably be improved when a child is forced to make new friends or sit alone all day

4. Disruption of ones comfort zone

It is incredible to watch the urgency and ferocity students respond with when thrust out of their comfort zone and into a new situation. Students will quickly have to learn a whole host of things in a short period of time: How to navigate the area, where to eat, how to sign up for classes, what to do after class etc.

5. An opportunity for the parent-child dynamic to take the next step

So long as the child is under the parents roof, the relationship can often take on a dynamic where the parent reprimands and encourages the child to take action and the child refuses- sound familer?

This loop is unproductive and very difficult to break out of. Once the child is on his own however, he will realize that he alone is responsible for his fate and will begin to take ownership of it.
